The Department implements projects of Rural water supply through programmes, such as the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme ( 100% funded by GOI ) , the Prime Minister Gramodaya Yojana (PMGY) of State Plan , Sector Reform , Sub Mission , Swajaldhara ,etc.

   • Under Sub- Mission Programme, works mainly pertaining to water quality, water catchments conservation, Rain Water Harvesting systems, etc are taken up.

   •  The Department has already set up two stationary Water Testing Laboratories ( one at Chumukedima Treatment Plant Site under Dimapur District and the other at Kohima town Kohima in District). The Laboratories have facilities to test water quality for common physical, Bacteriological and Chemical contaminations.

   •  The Department has also been taking up works on Rain Water Harvesting Schemes under Eleventh Finance Commission (EFC) Award in both rural and Urban areas.

   •  The Department also implements State and GOI funded urban water supply projects for Urban towns.

   •  The Department also carries out implementation of projects on Urban and Rural Sanitation, through both State Plan PMGY and Central programme.

Hitherto, the Department has been looking after all activities of Operation & Maintenance of water supply systems both in Urban and Rural areas in the State. As per the policy of the Government for communitization of rural water supply , the village authorities are to take over normal activities of Operation & Maintenance of water supply systems in their respective villages , and the process of handing over of completed schemes is underway. Collection of water tax revenue is also done in District and Sub Divisional head quarters by the Department.
